All of us with any management responsibility tend to have some key metrics or performance indicators in our lives. Some may have just a few primary measures, others amongst us may have a whole scorecard to contend with.
The question for all is “Am I moving towards my KPI?”
If the answer is “yes” then you are currently effective and what you need to work on now is efficency. In other words you are doing the right thing and now you need to do it better – iron out bottlenecks, reduce lag time, reduce the costs whilst maintaining quality.
If the answer is “no” then you are not being effective, and that’s what you need to focus on – getting things done the right way, driving down errors, eliminate rework, handovers, etc.
The reality for most of us is that our KPIs exist in various states and dependencies. The trick is to find the right balance that has everything pulling in the right direction for effectiveness with a couple of the most important elements being targeted for efficiency.
The everyday challenge is always visibility – how do I get the volumes of data available to me surfaced in a way that is digestible and meaningful and helps point me to what I need to focus on for improvement.
