In a previous post, I sought to be able to explain XMPro; simply, without the techno speak that flows so naturally from my lips; and how it can make a positive difference to your business. As mentioned, I spent the past weekend walking a portion of the Great North Walk. This was my opportunity to refine my explanations of XMPro.
My walking companions, Rolf, Ed, Craig, Al and Derek did go a long way in assisting me in unbundling the gobbledygook of BPM and have a clear explanation of XMPro. There is only a place for XMPro; it must add value to the business otherwise it is just gobbledygook.
The irony of my previous blog title was unintentional – “avoiding technical goobledygook and stop being a BPM nerd”. There I am trying to flee the nerd caricature and simplify the world and I use a nerd language TLA (three-letter anagram) to explain a point. The really funny part of this is that the irony of the title had to be explained to me by Al.
“Can you please explain XMPro so I understand it in as few words as possible?” I decided the first step in the journey was to ignore Miss Roberts’ advice from year 2 to never to answer a question with a question.
My question with a question approach was “Would you like to know what it is, what it does or what it means?”
“What is XMPro?”
XMPro is a business process portal with intelligent web forms and very smart workflows.
I think ‘what is XMPro?’ was wasted on my walk companions. This addresses the features and functions and really when you are the CEO responsible for the safe management of the business, why would you care with such detail. You drive the car, turning it on is all you need to know.
The next part of me unpacking XMPro was to address ‘what does XMPro do?’
This is the part where I tell them about XMPro’s unique capabilities. In reply to my previous blog post, Pieter van Schalkwyk uses the analogy of a Swiss Army knife rather than a pen knife. He is absolutely correct and I think his answer is helpful. My walking companions are very smart accomplished people with leadership positions in leading companies. Since I was spending two days with them, on the ‘need to know’ scale they did not need to know what XMPro does, rather only what it means.
The key to removing gobbledygook is being clear about what it means.
What does XMPro mean to you?
So the ‘mean’ part is about the result.
XMPro must make a difference and deliver value to your organisation. This trite and cute answer needs context in the eyes and ears of the receiver, as every business is different. I could talk non-stop for two days about the problems we have solved and value created for other customers, but I have learned that is just a different form of gobbledygook if the examples aren’t specifically relevant.
I know from experience that business leaders are always trying to facilitate growth, or avoid trouble. I also know that most of our XMPro customers classify their multitude of process wins in one or more categories: improving customer service, increasing revenues, reducing costs and improving compliance.
A future blog will explore how to create a framework for business value and positioning of solutions such as XMPro.
I recommend the walk to everyone plus the refreshing cold beers at the Patonga Hotel afterwards.
