What would it be like to be able to recall, at will and instantly, anything you have ever learned? What if you could reach deep into your memory’s past, bring up any piece of information and apply it solving today’s problems and making the most of today’s opportunities?
So far, such capabilities have existed solely within the characters of Hollywood movies and novels. There is no pill that can be swallowed, no surgical procedure that can be undergone, that can achieve, in a human being, the ability to access every bit of useful information that’s ever been acquired. We are simply not capable of making use of anywhere near the full amount of information that’s been stored in our brains.
It’s the same in the world of business. Well, it used to be. Times are changing, and changing fast. It all started, of course, with the internet, which ushered in a whole new world of information storage, retrieval and analysis. But we have, to date, only scratched the surface of what online technology is capable of. Just because we humans can’t access all the information we would like to make our lives better, that doesn’t mean that organisations can’t.
Through mobile phones and other Internet-enabled devices, businesses, their customers, partners and employees are more connected than ever. On top of that we have the Internet of Things and big data, both are which are contributing to our quickly expanding stockpiles of business information. But while the data we have stored is vast, it’s of little value if it can’t be effectively accessed, made sense of and converted into action.
The successful businesses of the future will be those that can unlock the potential of their data. They will be the businesses that can use data, previously non-existent or inaccessible, to make new discoveries, gain new insights and see around corners.
